Sea Lions – 1975
Among the many, many, many attractions at Depoe Bay, Oregon, is the number of Sea Lions living out in the Pacific Ocean. Many of them lay on the rocks along the coast giving a tourists a thrilling view as they go about their daily lives. Almost every small town between Astoria Oregon and San Francisco, and then some, has a colony of some sort [...]
Bois de Boulogne
From Wikipedia Bois de Boulogne “is a large public park located along the western edge of the 16th arrondissement of Paris, near the suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt and Neuilly-sur-Seine. It was created between 1852 and 1858 during the reign of the Emperor Louis Napoleon.”
No clue why the clock was there. Or even what year the pic [...]
Salisbury Crags – 1965
Outside of Edinburgh is this little hill known as Salisbury Crags. The hill itself is actually in Holyrood Park, a 650 acre park created by James V in 1541.
The hill is 151 feet tall, with Arthur’s Crag at 823 feet behind it. The cliffs are formed of basalt that has been a popular rock climbing spot since the early days of the sport a [...]
Luxor Egypt – 1950s
The Luxor Las Vegas takes it’s name from Luxor Egypt, a city across the Nile River from both the Valley of Kings and the Valley of Queens. Luxor is the actually the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes. The Karnak Temple Complex, or just Karnak, has been used as a place of worship for millennia and contains a large number of temples, statues [...]
Tea Party – 1968
Here is another interesting set of slides. The woman seen in “VW Bus” at a Tea Party of some sort. I’d guess that they are all military wives stationed in Japan, but maybe it was part of a Sister City Program? The woman on the right looks several years older in these old November 1968 pictures.
I can’t really tell wh [...]
VW Bus
I’d dearly love to know the story of this VW Bus. Did this family rent it on their tour in Europe? Did they just buy it and wanted to show it off to family? Picture is an unknown year and location. Late 1950s to early 1960’s I’d guess. I have another picture of this same woman, looking a few years older from 1968.
Rialto Bridge – Venice, Italy &...
The Rialto Bridge is one of four bridges that cross the Grand Canal in Venice. According to Wikipedia the current version was built in 1591.
The sign hanging from the bridge says “Comune Di Venezia, Mostra Del Guardi, Palazzo Grassi, 5 Grugno – 10 Ottobre 1965”
Mostra del Guardi translates to “Watch the show,” [...]
Washington DC Line – 1969
Back in the 1960s, instead of standing in line for hours for the latest movie, people stood in line for hours to get into the White House in Washington DC.
Note that the Washington Monument is in the background. This was March 1969, so people are a bit bundled up because of the weather there. Richard Nixon would have been President for only [...]
The Egyptian Museum – 1950s
The Egyptian Museum in Cairo holds 120,000 or more artifacts collected from locations around Egypt, but especially from the Giza complex.
This is an interesting picture of the museum building as it existed in the 1950s. The exact year is unknown but as it is part of the same “art and history” collection of slides that includes t [...]
