Landmark Hotel – 1968
From 1968 comes this picture of the Landmark Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Unfortunately it wasn’t a very popular attraction from the beginning as it’s history shows.
Building started in 1962, but funding ran out when it was about 80% complete. The building sat until 1966 when the Teamsters Union Pens [...]
Baalbek ruins – 1950s
The Baalbek ruins are the remains of Roman temples built roughly 50 miles from both Damascus and Beirut. Archaeology digs have shown that the area has been inhabited for over 9000 years. At the time of Roman occupation the city was known as Heliopolis, but the Roman temples were definitely built over older ruins.
These photos were taken somet [...]
The Colosseum
How many locations in the world have “The” in their title? How many also have a fairly generic word in their title? How many have the instant name recognition of The Colosseum in Rome?
The number is pretty low, few buildings in the world have the same recognition. Even fewer of them are more then 2000 years old.

Locke, California – 1980s
Locke, California was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. The town was built in a time of racism and prejudice against the Chinese, and served as an out of the way refuge for Chinese farm hands who lived in the area.
The original townsite was a collection of three Chinese owned buildings called Lockeport built in 191 [...]
Ghost Town of Bourne, Oregon – ...
The Ghost Town of Bourne, Oregon is located in the Whitman National Forest in the north eastern corner of Oregon. Unlike a lot of ghost towns this one has a year round population, even though it’s much smaller then the population of the town in it’s heyday. Most of them are people who spend the summers here working the nearby gold [...]

Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello was the United State’s third President’s home from roughly 1768 to his death in 1826. In between that time he had a number of important positions in not only forming the American Republic, but in it’s governance. Being the man he was, Jefferson continued remodeling the house his entire lif [...]
Disney’s Carousel of Progress &...
As we saw a couple of days ago, in 1964 Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress opened at the New York World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows. It was built as the prime feature of the General Electric Pavilion. This picture was taken in 1965 towards the end of the Fair.
Vintage photo of the Walt Disney Carousel of Progress while at the 1964 [...]
Church of the Holy Sepulchre – ...
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is located in the city of Jerusalem. The site is one of Christianity’s most revered sites as both the place where Jesus was crucified, and where he was resurrected. This is confusing to many but the church building is actually large enough that it encompasses both sites. Wikipedia has a great image showi [...]
Damascus, Syria – 1952
It’s slides like this one of Damascus, Syria that make me wish I knew the history behind the photographer who took it. It’s one tantalizing picture out of dozens of that explore the history and art of Egypt. This photo was taken sometime in the 1950’s, likely 1952 based on the dates on other photos in the same collection. I [...]
