Otter Crest is the name of the head here. Otter Rock is in the middle of the picture, out in the Pacific Ocean. This location is only about 3/4 of a mile north of Yaquina Head, Oregon. The rock is named due to the number of Sea Otters who used to live around the rock and around Otter Crest. The rock also lent it’s name to the nearby community, now one of Oregon’s multitude of Ghost Towns.
At the time of this picture, taken in May 1982, it was an empty stretch of coast a few miles north of Lincoln City, Oregon known for Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area. Unfortunately the scenic beauty of this spot has been ruined due to developers who built a series of condominiums where the houses are in the middle left of the picture on top of Otter Crest.
It’s sometimes amazing to see how much “progress” has been made between these vintage pictures and the reality of the same location in modern times.
