Ghost Town of Bourne, Oregon – ...
The Ghost Town of Bourne, Oregon is located in the Whitman National Forest in the north eastern corner of Oregon. Unlike a lot of ghost towns this one has a year round population, even though it’s much smaller then the population of the town in it’s heyday. Most of them are people who spend the summers here working the nearby gold [...]
Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello &...
Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello was the United State’s third President’s home from roughly 1768 to his death in 1826. In between that time he had a number of important positions in not only forming the American Republic, but in it’s governance. Being the man he was, Jefferson continued remodeling the house his entire lif [...]
Disney’s Carousel of Progress &...
As we saw a couple of days ago, in 1964 Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress opened at the New York World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows. It was built as the prime feature of the General Electric Pavilion. This picture was taken in 1965 towards the end of the Fair.
Vintage photo of the Walt Disney Carousel of Progress while at the 1964 [...]
Church of the Holy Sepulchre – ...
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is located in the city of Jerusalem. The site is one of Christianity’s most revered sites as both the place where Jesus was crucified, and where he was resurrected. This is confusing to many but the church building is actually large enough that it encompasses both sites. Wikipedia has a great image showi [...]
Damascus, Syria – 1952
It’s slides like this one of Damascus, Syria that make me wish I knew the history behind the photographer who took it. It’s one tantalizing picture out of dozens of that explore the history and art of Egypt. This photo was taken sometime in the 1950’s, likely 1952 based on the dates on other photos in the same collection. I [...]
Gefion Fountain – 1965
The Gefion Fountain is on the harbor front of the city of Cophenhagen, Denmark. It celebrates the mythical creation of the island Copenhagen is on, as recited in the 9th-century Skaldic poem, Ragnarsdrápa. The Norse Goddess Gefjun created the island by turning her four sons into oxen and plowing up the land of what is now Lake Mälaren and put [...]
New York World’s Fair – 1...
1965 was a year of promise and despair. The Space Race was on. Civil Rights were on everyone’s mind. And the 1964 New York World’s Fair was in it’s second season.
This is the first of an entire collection of slides taken in 1965 at the New York World’s Fair that I have. It’s among a set of Disney and Expo 67 pho [...]
Happy Couple – 1976
Look at the great detail in this picture of an elderly happy couple. The brick fire place is awesome, as are the wood pine walls. I think we might have even had that blanket, or one just like it, when I was a kid. It also looks like there is a possible Thomas Kincaid painting hanging on the wall. I was not able to find the exact painting, but [...]
Pink House – 1958
In 1958 we find a pink house made of bricks and yellow sun shades over the windows. Two bathing beauties are out front enjoying the sun and some ice tea. Or perhaps something a little stronger. One of the cool things about Kodachrome film is that it made colors look a lot more rich. The house, the awnings and the grass are all proof of this. [...]
